Team History

An original member of the SEC, Tulane has some genuine bright spots sprinkled in their history. They won 3 SEC titles in the 30's and 40's and finished undefeated with Shaun King in 1998. That was followed with about 20 years of nothing special, but it appears Willie Fritz has tapped back into this programs potential. One of the premier teams at the mid major level these past few years.

Quick Facts

Peak of Program

I'm going with 1939. They capped off their regular season beating LSU then went to the Sugar Bowl undefeated ranked #5, and lost to #1 by a single point. An SEC championship and a field goal away from a valid claim of a national championship is hard to beat.

Rock Bottom

Really the entire Buddy Teevens tenure (mid 90s). He got 5 seasons and his best season was 3-9, every other season was 2 or fewer wins. It takes some real apathy for that much losing to be tolerated.

Best Ever Player

Tommy Mason (RB, 1958-1960): Was hard to choose him over Matt Forte, but Tommy went first overall in the NFL draft. Was first team all SEC and third team All American in 1960.

Best Ever Coach

Willie Fritz (2016-2023): Second all time in wins at Tulane. Took over a floundering G5 program and set them on a trajectory where a promotion to a power conference may be in their future.
