Team History

A historic program that broke the college football color barrier in the State of Texas in the 1950's. Mean Joe Green led the team to a bit of a golden era in the late 60s. Then in the early 21st century they won 4 consecutive Sun Belt titles. They have made bowl games in 7 of the last 9 years, even while adjusting to a new conference.

Quick Facts

Peak of Program

Beats me. Maybe 1959 when they started off 8-0 and were ranked #16 before teetering off. Or maybe halfway through 2018, when they finished the previous regular season 9-3 and started off that one 4-0 with wins over cross town rivals SMU and SEC foe Arkansas.

Rock Bottom

In 2009 they just finished a three year run where they went a combined 5-31, then decided to bring the coach back for a year 4. Ouch.

Best Ever Player

Joe Greene (DT, 1966-1968): A unanimous All American and 3 time all conference selection. Opponents averaged under 2 yards a carry in his 39 games played.

Best Ever Coach

Odus Mitchell (1946-1966): Has the record for most wins in school history, to go along with 10 conference championships.
