Team History

A program with a long and unremarkable history until Sonny Lubick showed up on campus in 1993. They've spent 43 weeks in the AP poll in their entire history, and 40 of those weeks were with Sonny calling the shots. In 2017 they opened a new stadium and current coach Jay Norvell has improved the team by multiple wins two years in a row. Could be a team to watch if he can do it again.

Quick Facts

Peak of Program

From 1994 to 2003 they appeared in the polls in 8 different seasons, won 6 conference championships, never had a losing season, and won double digit games 4 times.

Rock Bottom

In 1961-62 they went 0-20, with only 3 of those games being within 1 score. They averaged 7 points per game during this stretch.

Best Ever Player

Joey Porter (DE, 1995-1998): Showed up on campus playing offense and didn't make the switch till his junior year. But still registered 22 career sacks and a first team all conference selection.

Best Ever Coach

Sonny Lubick (1993–2007): Not even close, the field is named after him for a reason. Jim McElwain is the only other coach in the last 70 years to put up a winning record here.
