Team History

Dick Romney (of relation to Mitt), was coach here for 29 years from 1919 to 1948 establishing a standard of winning football. 4 separate coaches have finished a season ranked at Utah State. They joined the Mountain West in 2013 and have won the conference championship once since. Longtime BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall is coming back to the state to take over the program in 2025.

Peak of Program

In 1961 they only lost the bowl game and finished #10 in the AP poll behind the #1 offense in the country and a top 10 defense. They went 9-2 the year before and 8-2 the two years after.

Rock Bottom

From 1998-2010 they went 13 seasons in a row with a losing record. The worst of it being back to back double digit loss seasons in 2006-2007.

Best Ever Player

Merlin Olsen (DT, 1959–61): Two time first team All American went 3rd overall in the NFL Draft. A recurring character for over 50 episodes in the show Little House on the Prairie.

Best Ever Coach

Dick Romney (1918–48): Utah State’s winningest coach and namesake of original stadium. Won 4 conference championships and is in the college football hall of fame.
